What does that wave look like? Turning the light bulb? Polishing the mirror? as a recent owner, I need to know this.

First off, I will Subaru wave back at you if I'm in my wife's outback sport.
Second, small rant: Nobody ever M3 waves at me. Even with another E36. I went to O'Reilly's (auto parts) this weekend and pulled up right next to a guy who had a 325, but obviously wanted it to be an M3 (kit, heftier exhaust, etc.) and he didn't even acknowledge me. So, I feel your pain. Even though I realize 'Roo owners are generally nicer than BMW owners...

The one time I ever passed another Phaeton in mine, I tooted my horn at him, and he flipped me off.

I get the Cobalt wave all the time.
If they notice that I am actually driving a cobalt, as I have no front bumper on my car ever...

This is a thing? I thought it was just a Jeep Wrangler thing to wave at each other.

Can't always wave when you're holding the A pillar or other interior components to keep them from rattling. I drive my Subaru one handed all the time because of this.

I delivered a pizza to a guy who also had an SVT Focus, and we stood around for about 5 minutes outside in ~40 degree weather talking about our cars. That's what's cool about being car guys, you have an immediate and deep connection to someone you've never met before, especially if you're driving an exclusive or performance car.

I waved to a lady in a little red corvette convertible yesterday (my GTO's older sibling?) and she didn't wave back either. Maybe it was a stretch.

Mainstream brand bub, get use to it. Many Subaru buyers today, have no idea what WRC means.

Sometimes I do the motorcycle wave from the Tucson because I'm an idiot. No one's ever waved back... but then again, I've done it like twice.

If it were a 7 Series or an S-Class, I'd agree with you. But the Phaeton is rare and quite special. The people who own them tend to be car guys who know their stuff. I've met a few (five, I think), and there's a genuine camaraderie there.

Well, this wasn't the case, obviously.

The key is to not wave at anything stock. If it has mods, they will most likely wave back, if they notice you. Also, don't try to wave to Sti owners cause if you're driving anything other than an Sti they won't wave back. Follow these rules and you will probably get more waves back.
